Stuart - Team Leader - Options Assessment

I joined TSYS Europe after working at G.E. Capital (Leeds) for 3 years in the Risk Management Area. TSYS Europe was a new company in the UK with strong opportunities to grow and I saw it as a good place to work which would fit better with my home life as I lived in York. At the start, things were a bit hectic as I found myself flying off to Dublin for a week for a client meeting and travelling to the U.S. for just under 4 weeks for training - all of this within the first two months. Once I got back to the office after this travelling, work became frantic through converting three portfolios within three months into a brand new environment - needless to say there was a lot to do. During the first six months I worked as an Issue Analyst, investigating problems that the clients raised and finding solutions or ensuring amendments to how the system worked were implemented. I could never predict what the next day held or whom I would end up working with. I found myself learning a lot not only about the system and industry, but about the new group of people with whom I was working.

At the end of the first year, identified problems with the structure led to changes within the company. The creation of a new department provided a good opportunity for advancement. I successfully applied for a team leader position in the new department and spent the next year working in the new team, building the processes and ensuring that the team had all the required knowledge to support the clients. The best thing about this was the group of people whom I got to work with on a daily basis, there was a vibrant atmosphere in the department but whenever the going got tough everyone pulled together to get the work finished.

For the last two years, the responsibilities of the team have changed and the number of people I manage has grown, but I still find that the level of team spirit is still strong when required. The level of work has settled to a manageable amount which has allowed team members the opportunity to develop themselves through the Right Steps process. TSYS actively promotes Right Steps to ensure that all employees get the opportunity to develop their skills to allow a better chance of career advancement. As part of this process, I have had the opportunity to design and implement a training course for new starters, develop the knowledge required to provide onsite training and consultancy for clients as well as completing the Visa Certificate in Bank Card Management course. The best bit was that TSYS picked up the bills for the training.

I will shortly be approaching my 4 year anniversary with TSYS and I can still see that the company is growing and finding its place in the European market. Internally and externally, things are changing - that makes TSYS Europe an interesting place to work. As a case in point, today I found myself designing an approach that TSYS can take to the Government's new APR calculation that the industry must follow. This entailed taking the legal calculation and developing an approach that the system could follow, not very exciting but certainly different!
