Paul - Manager - European Programming
I decided to join TSYS 4 years ago for the opportunity that I thought it would offer, and I haven't been disappointed! I've been with TSYS since just after they opened their office here in the UK in 2001. I started out then as a mainframe programmer, but now I manage 2 team leaders and 8 programmers - and we're still growing! It's been great to see the team grow and develop, whilst maintaining the great team spirit that we had when I first joined. It seems like a long time ago that the 8 founder members of the programming team met on the flight from Manchester to Atlanta on our way to TSYS's headquarters in Columbus, in the state of Georgia in the USA.
It's probably a good indication of the sort of company TSYS is to work for that 6 of the original 8 still work for TSYS, and the team has now grown to 19 team members.
I started out with 3 weeks of intensive training in Columbus, but we've come a long way since then. Video conferencing, computer-based training and instructor-led courses in the UK now help our new starters get to grips with the job, but we still like to send people to Columbus - it's great to meet all the people you talk to on the phone on a daily basis!
The thing that I most enjoy is that you never know what's going to happen next. The industry is constantly changing and TSYS needs to be developing new ideas all the time to make sure we stay competitive. This makes things challenging, especially when you've been asked to fix a program you've never seen before! We're expected to work hard, but there are the rewards and benefits associated with this - private medical insurance is a standard benefit for all team members, as is annual travel insurance and 26 days holiday.
What sort of company is TSYS to work for? Unlike anywhere else I've ever experienced! TSYS really looks after and cares for its team members - so much so that every year we have a team appreciation week. This has involved everything from getting TSYS merchandise to a free guided bus tour around York - when was the last time you got paid to get on a bus? Having fun is a corporate goal - we have a special events team set up to organise events throughout the year, such as an end of year party and other celebrations. The social scene is also pretty good - we regularly play five-a-side football, and there's always someone organising a night out. Back to top
