Scott - Manager - European Programming

I manage the European Programming Team charged with providing production support (24/7) and development resources to the TSYS Gift Card platform. In its simplest form, Gift Cards can be looked upon as a replacement to gift vouchers, providing a number of benefits over the paper-based offering. The team based in York have become the technical experts on the platform that means that we not only provide programming resource, we are also involved in pre and post sales support and as technical consultants to both clients and our own business representatives.

Having joined the European Programming team at its inception as a Senior Programmer/Analyst, I soon took over the role of Team Leader. This involved managing the workload of a team of Programmer Analysts as we supported the business. Duties involved managing critical issues and as a point of escalation, as well as the general duties of a Team Leader. As a senior member of a new and emerging group, I was involved in many of the policy decisions that have shaped the team's involvement in the European expansion of TSYS.

The opportunity came to develop my role when I was placed in charge of the technical team that would support the TSYS Gift Card entry into the European market. I have been fortunate to have been involved at a number of levels, from sales support, technical consultancy, development and production support. A major part of the task has been developing the relationships both internally within TSYS and with clients, to ensure that requirements are met and, where necessary, to set expectations. The key factor about my role, and that of many others within the company, is flexibility. I personally enjoy variety and challenge, and my four years at TSYS Europe have not lacked either of these.

The company has provided me with tremendous opportunities to develop my career beyond that of a programmer/analyst and to feel that my involvement does make a difference to the company. TSYS have encouraged me to undertake an MBA with the Open University, recognising the commitment necessary to take this demanding course. My experience with the company is that there is a great deal of opportunity for individuals who enjoy working within a fast-paced, multi-functional team environment providing strong customer service. Team members do, however, struggle when they do not enjoy the challenge of a demanding role, and look to others to provide opportunities for them.

Individuals joining the company can make a real difference to the development of the TSYS Europe identity. It is still a very young company and sometimes suffers from its U.S. parents culture which is not always a good fit. With that said, great strides have been made in taking the best parts of the TSYS culture and placing a European slant on it.
