Julie - Product Development Consultant
I work within BEST which is the Business Expansion and Sales Team. The sales team is tasked with bringing in new business to TSYS Europe, from not only the UK, but the rest of Europe, as well as consulting existing clients to ensure TSYS Europe continues to provide a first class service after conversion.
I am responsible for supporting the sales directors. My role is to drive a number of consultancy activities relating to sales projects which shall include the management of responses to RFIs and RFPs, the participation within functional site analyses, solution design, and consultancy. In addition, I am required to provide strategic consultancy to existing clients on an ad-hoc basis.
After completing a Bio Chemistry Degree at Leeds University in 2001, I worked within Bio Chemistry at Leeds General Infirmary for a while. The work was very much on an individual basis - there was lots of waiting around for machine analysis. I also found it disappointing that I was never able to see the results of my work as there was no patient contact. The work was also shift based and I decided that it just wasn't for me. I struggled to find my niche for a while. After that I worked in public liability insurance which didn't spark an interest.
I wasn't happy with my previous jobs, so I looked at postgraduate courses but nothing stood out. TSYS was recommended to me by a friend who worked there. I applied to work within Process Improvement and spent my first year there. I had no idea of what TSYS did really when I initially applied - I had never worked in credit. Process Improvement enabled me to work in lots of different areas with many different people. I work in York but have been over to Columbus in the US where the parent company is based and I am always in touch with the States as part of my job. I gained promotion in the first year within Process Improvement and was glad to receive excellent statistical analysis training to give me the skills to succeed in my role. Being an ambitious person, I wanted to branch out and move up in the company. I approached the senior director within BEST to discuss opportunities within the team - we discussed what the team did, what skills were required and the direction the team was heading in.
I was promoted to the BEST team. It was a huge change as I went from an operational support role to a sales environment which is certainly proving to be challenging. There were lots of soft skills to learn – I had to present to prospects, potential and existing customers. I am being sent out to Columbus in February to further develop my knowledge and extend my list of contacts.
Although I fell into the job in a way, I really enjoy my job within credit card processing. What was great when I joined TSYS was the strong American presence. I found the American expats added brought with them the values that are very much team and family orientated which underpin TSYS' values.
My experience is if you work hard you are recognised for it. If you don't possess all the skills but show potential, TSYS will give you a chance. TSYS expect a lot to ensure that our clients are provided with the highest quality service possible. Back to top
